Hold on to your hats! Texas state authorities are swooping in, seizing control of a public park along the Rio Grande in Eagle Pass, a town that witnessed a massive uptick in illegal crossings last month. Mayor Rolando Salinas spilled the beans, revealing that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) dropped the bomb on him Wednesday morning, announcing that they’re “taking full control” of the park in a bold move to tackle the unprecedented surge in illegal border crossings. It’s a border showdown in the Lone Star State!

Mayor Rolando Salinas laid it out in a candid Facebook live stream from Shelby Park: “This is not something that we wanted. This is not something that we asked for as a city. I want to make that clear.” It seems like the state’s move took the town by surprise, and the mayor is not holding back on his feelings about it!

Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, has suggested that the measure aims to enhance deterrents for migrants traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Breaking news, Twitter-style! Governor Greg Abbott boldly proclaimed, “As caravans of migrants are moving through Mexico toward the U.S. border, we are making clear that Texas will be a tough place to cross.” In a gripping video from Wednesday night, the scene is set with two military vehicles standing guard behind a freshly erected gate, signaling a fortress-like approach to border control. It’s a real-time drama unfolding in the Lone Star State!

Flashback to 2021! Governor Abbott, not one to mince words, declared a disaster and unleashed Operation Lone Star in response to what critics dubbed the Biden administration’s misguided and lax border policies. Fast forward to the present, and the mayor spilled the tea: “They’re using that declaration to take full control, custody of Shelby Park.” This power move comes hot on the heels of a massive influx of migrants illegally crossing into the U.S. at Eagle Pass last month. The chaos prompted the Biden administration to take action, with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) throwing a curveball by temporarily halting operations at international railway crossing bridges in two Texas cities. The border battleground is heating up.

Social media footage depicted a lengthy line of immigrants at the Eagle Pass crossing. On December 15, the U.S. Border Patrol reported encountering “continuous groups of migrants led by misinformation making illegal entry into the United States” over the past couple of weeks. Both bridges in Eagle Pass and El Paso were closed on December 18, as CBP redirected personnel to aid in taking illegal immigrants into custody, according to the agency’s statement

Buckle up for the backstory! CBP dropped a bombshell, citing “a recent resurgence of smuggling organizations moving migrants through Mexico via freight trains” as the reason for their bold measures. But that’s not all – they joined forces with Mexican authorities to tackle the issue of illegal border crossings head-on.

Eagle Pass found itself drowning in a wave of approximately 12,000 illegal immigrants in December, as reported by Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Republican with a front-row seat to the chaos. While the number of illegal crossings has tapered off, the mayor got wind on Wednesday that the state’s operation at Shelby Park is a strategic chess move, aiming to thwart any potential future surge of illegal immigration. And get this, it’s not a temporary gig – the state is taking control of the park “indefinitely.” Oh, and those temporary barriers at Shelby Park? They’ve been holding the fort since 2021, according to the Texas DPS. It’s a saga of shifting borders and strategic park takeovers!

Last summer, Eagle Pass allowed state authorities to deploy miles of razor wire and stacked shipping containers to create a barrier at the park. But this was later canceled after residents complained.

Hold your horses! What was once accessible to residents is now off-limits. Mayor Salinas dropped the bomb, stating, “They will be denying access. Again, this is not the city of Eagle Pass denying access to the park. This is the state using that emergency declaration.” It’s a clear power move, with the state flexing its muscles through that emergency declaration!
